Man jailed for life for murdering pregnant ex-partner

Matthew Smith was jailed for life with a minimum tariff of at least 18 years after a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court found him guilty on Monday, 21 March 2016, of murdering his pregnant ex-partner.

District Crown Prosecutor, Douglas Mackay from the Crown Prosecution Service in the East of England said: "Becky Parker had ended her relationship with Matthew Smith in December 2014.

"And even though he had access to their two young children he simply would not accept the relationship was over.

"This was only heightened when he discovered she had moved on with a new partner and that they were expecting a baby.

"He was callous and acted with rage and jealousy, needlessly taking Becky's life and leaving her children without their mother.

"We hope the substantial sentence handed down today will help Becky's family and friends move on from this horrific ordeal."
