Essex: Footballer fined for assault

A West Ham footballer has today pleaded guilty to three offences following an incident outside the Sugar Hut nightclub in Brentwood, Essex.

James Tomkins, 25, has been fined £3,500 for assaulting a police officer, resisting a police officer and being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Southend Magistrates' Court heard how Tomkins had been drinking at the popular night club on Saturday December 21, 2013 and that he had become disorderly after being challenged by a member of the club's staff. When police were called he assaulted one officer and resisted another.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the East of England, Frank Ferguson said: "We are pleased with the outcome of today's hearing, which demonstrates that no-one is above the law and that each case is dealt with on its own merits."
