CPS East of England advises police to charge Essex pair over sex attack on baby

CPS East of England has advised Essex Police to charge a man and a woman in relation to injuries to a 10 week old baby.

District Crown Prosecutor Michelle Brown, who is the CPS East of England co-ordinator for Violence Against Women and Girls, said: "I have authorised Essex Police to charge a 31 year old man and a 23 year old woman jointly with two charges each of attempted rape on a 10 week old baby.

"The man and woman are also jointly charged with three charges each of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

"They are also each jointly charged with neglect of the baby, causing unnecessary suffering. All the charges refer to dates between 7 and 12 August 2013.

"The decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Essex Police were contacted by Essex Social Care after the child was admitted to Colchester General Hospital on 10 August 2013 and an investigation was launched by the Child Abuse Investigation Team.

The man and woman will appear at Colchester Magistrates Court on 15 August 2013.

Ms Brown said: "These are very serious charges. The man and woman are entitled to a fair trial and nothing should be reported which would prejudice that trial."

The man and the woman each face a total of six charges based on their acting together. Please be aware that reporting restrictions under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 apply in this case.
