How do I qualify as a solicitor?
Qualifying as a solicitor involves both academic training and vocational training.
What academic training will I need?
The most popular route is to complete a law degree. Competition for university place is fierce and youll need good A level passes in any three academic subjects.
What if I chose to study for a degree other than law?
Then you will need to complete either the Common Professional Examination (CPE) course, a Post Graduate Diploma in Law (PgDL) course or a senior-status degree in law. Again, there is usually tough competition for places on these courses, and you will need a good degree.
What does the vocational training involve?
After successfully completing a law degree, CPE or GDL, you will need to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC). Covering a year of full time study, or two years part time study, this course provides professional training on a range of legal topics. However, the content of the course and the way it is taught will vary depending upon which institution you chose to study at.
What if I don't have a degree?
You can still qualify as a solicitor by working in a legal office, joining the Institute of Legal Executives and passing exams to qualify, and then taking your LPC.
