How do I qualify as a barrister?
Qualifying as a barrister involves four key steps:
Academic training
The most popular route is to complete a law degree. Competition for university place is fierce and you will need good A level passes in any three academic subjects. If you study a subject other than law you will need to complete the Common Professional Examination (CPE) course or Post Graduate Diploma in Law (PgDL) course.
Vocational training
This usually takes the form of the Bar Vocational Course (BVC). This runs for one year full time or two years part time. Before registering on this course students will first need to join one of the four Inns of Court.
Pupillage
This provides practical hands on training experience under the supervision of a qualified barrister. At CPS we provide opportunities for legal trainees.
Continuing professional development
Barristers are required to undertake regular training and professional development. At CPS training is provided by local offices, through our headquarters or through external courses.
