Designated Caseworkers
Designated Caseworkers (DCWs) are non legal staff who are qualified to prosecute certain cases in the magistrates' courts.
Their role is similar to that of a caseworker, except they attend court, dealing with most summary only cases and straightforward either way cases that are not likely to be given more than six imprisonment as a sentence. The type of offences DCWs typically prosecute include shoplifting, common assault, motoring offences, drunk and disorderly, and carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
They can also ask for both restraining and exclusion orders, as well as costs and compensation for the victim.
The role can provide a developmental opportunity for administration staff who don't want to move into a managerial role, or it can be a step on the route to qualifiying as a lawyer.
You will need:
- Well developed interpersonal skills, together with good written and oral skills.
- Sound judgement and an ability to reach balanced and unbiased views, and an ability to analyse problems and produce practical workable solutions.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills.
- The ability to work as part of a team, often under pressure.
- Experience of, or potential for, managing staff.
- The ability to prioritise work and manage your own time effectively, and to balance conflicting priorities where necessary.
