Derbyshire CPS Citizenship Project
Derbyshire Crown Prosecution Service, in conjunction with Derbyshire County Council Local Education Authority, has developed two one-hour lessons that will form part of the schools' Citizenship curriculum.
What happens in the lessons?
The lessons have been designed to be fully interactive, involving the use of audio CD, DVD, visual imagery and even a graffiti wall. In the first session students learn about the CPS and its role within the Criminal Justice System, what happens in court, and the special measures available in the courtroom to support them should they ever be a victim or witness of crime.
During the second lesson students take on the role of a CPS prosecutor. They are given a full case file and have to make a decision on whether or not to take the case to court based on the available evidence.
We have developed a lesson plan to assist teachers in delivering the two sessions, and this, plus the relevant resources, can all be downloaded for use in the classroom.
These learning resources are listed under "tools" with each activity in the lesson plans.
What are the learning objectives?
Key concepts in the National Curriculum statutory programme for citizenship (revised September 2007) for both Key Stages 3 and 4 include:
- democracy
- justice
- rights and responsibilities
- identities and diversity
These concepts link with key processes that cover:
- critical thinking
- advocacy and representation
- taking informed and responsible action
This educational resource has been written to take account of these concepts and processes and is located within the role of the law and the justice system and how they relate to young people (KS3 1b) and a similar theme in (KS4 1b), within the range and content section. The activities have been designed to ensure that as many key concepts and, in particular, key processes are used. This, in turn, should contribute to a compelling learning experience for students which is central to the teaching of citizenship education.
