Record number of prosecutions in Derbyshire's courts
10/10/2006
Derbyshire Crown Prosecution Service experienced its busiest ever year, as a record number of people were prosecuted in the county's courts.
During the financial year April 2005 to March 2006 Derbyshire CPS dealt with a total of 32,378 cases - 29,792 cases in the county's five magistrates courts and a further 2,586 cases in the Crown Court. This compares with a total of 28,000 cases the year before. Figures on the number of cases dealt with during the first quarter of 2006/07 show this trend looks set to continue.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Brian Gunn said "It's very satisfying to see a significant increase in the number of criminals put before the courts this year. We are working closer than ever before with the police to ensure that those who commit offences are being brought to justice. These figures are a reflection of all the hard work and commitment of our staff at Derbyshire CPS and the effective joint working between all criminal justice agencies working to make Derbyshire a safer place in which to live and work."
