Conviction of Glenroy Reid

12/10/2006

A jury at Nottingham Crown Court has today found Glenroy Reid guilty of the murder of Simeon Grignon.

Mr Grignon died from a single stab wound to the heart following an exchange of words and a physical altercation with Reid in Derby City centre in the early hours of 29 January 2006.

Anna Zimand led the team from Derbyshire Crown Prosecution Service responsible for making the decision to bring the murder charge and for preparing the case against Reid.  She said:  "Our view was that Reid made a deliberate and unjustified assault on Mr Grignon, which directly resulted in his death.  We set out to prove that Reid was guilty of murder, and today that guilt has been proved.

"The prosecution case relied heavily on the CCTV footage which showed Reid making a deliberate lunging motion at Mr Grignon, from which he sustained the fatal injury.  We believed this showed that no one other than Reid was in sufficiently close proximity to the victim to cause the injury, and that his deliberate use of a potentially lethal weapon established an intent to kill or at least cause serious harm.

"Simeon's death was a tragic and senseless waste of life.  Here was a man with much to live for, and it was taken away in the most violent of circumstances.  Knife crime is, thankfully, rare on the streets of Derbyshire, but we will continue to work closely with the police to ensure that those carrying and using knives face the harshest possible treatment in the courts.

"Whilst we are clearly pleased with todays verdict, the overriding thoughts of the prosecution team are with Mr Grignon's family and his partner at this difficult time.  We hope that they can take some comfort from knowing that justice has been done."
