Victim Personal Statements
Victims are given the option to make a written statement saying how they have been affected by the crime, either physically, emotionally or financially. This is taken by the police, but is in addition to the information provided in the victim's original statement to them.
This personal statement then becomes part of the case papers. We take into account what the victim has said when we make decisions on the case and ensure that, where appropriate, the defence lawyers, magistrates and judges involved in the case are aware of the contents of the statement so they can be considered, for example, in sentencing.
Anyone who has been a victim of crime and given a statement to the police can make a Victim Personal Statement. Children or vulnerable adults can give permission for their parent or carer to make this statement for them.
