We want to hear your views to help us prepare our next scheme. The scheme will set out how we aim to challenge discrimination and promote equality.
What is the Single Equality Scheme?
The Single Equality Scheme is an action plan. It shows how we aim to:
- End unlawful discrimination because of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, transgender and age
- Promote equal opportunity
- End harassment
- Encourage good attitudes towards people who are disabled
- Encourage people with disabilities to take part in public life
- Encourage good relationships between people of different races
Our current Single Equality Scheme was published in 2006. That scheme needs to be replaced by April 2010. However, new laws affecting public bodies will not come into force until spring 2011. What exactly those new laws might include has not yet been settled. Because of this, we have decided to produce a one year scheme to take us up to March 2011.
Through our new Single Equality Scheme we aim to:
- Make prosecution decisions free from bias or prejudice
- Improve the service for victims and witnesses and measure how satisfied they are
- Increase success in prosecuting hate crimes
- Increase success in prosecuting violence against women
- Develop a service that involves diverse communities and uses this involvement to improve how we work
- Increase employee satisfaction
- Achieve a workforce which represents communities at all grades and levels
- Communicate with and involve diverse staff at all levels and use the results to improve how we work
To find out what we are proposing to include in our next scheme you can read the proposals in the consultation document:
- Read our public consultation document on proposals for our next Single Equality Scheme 2010 – 2011
- The consultation document is also available in PDF format
What is the Single Equality Scheme consultation about?
We want to make sure that our next Single Equality Scheme is fair and takes into account your needs and views.
We will consider your views when deciding what should go forward into the scheme. In addition, many of the commitments in our current scheme will be carried forward into the new scheme. We will publish the final version of the scheme in April 2010.
To help us we would like you to consider the following questions:
- Are the new objectives for 2010 - 11 clear?
- Are the actions to achieve these objectives the right ones?
- Have you any comments on the actions we are proposing to carry forward from the current equality scheme?
- Are there any further comments you wish to make?
