Associate Prosecutors

Responsible for the review and presentation of straight forward guilty pleas in the magistrates' Court, Associate Prosecutors liaise on a daily basis with both the defence and police in addition to dealing with a variety of remand cases and bail applications; this really is frontline advocacy work. This really is 'frontline' advocacy work.Under the supervision of experienced Crown Prosecutors, who assist and advise them, Associate Prosecutors divide their time between police stations, where they review cases, and local magistrates' courts. This exciting development means that paralegal caseworkers who pass a testing training course, validated by an external body, and are formally designated by the Director of Public Prosecutions, can undertake a wide range of magistrates' Court work.

This new and exciting role within the Crown Prosecution Service is part of our strategy to develop key skills within the organisation and to provide a clear career path. In 2007/08, Associate Prosecutors dealt with 20.4% of magistrates' courts' sessions. This was a significant increase on the figure of 14.7% for 2006/07. As well as providing high quality advocacy, the deployment of Associate Prosecutors has also freed up lawyers to deal with more complex cases, case preparation, and trial advocacy in both the magistrates' courts and the Crown Court.
